CANADIAN & IRISH GOVERNMENT SUPPORT IRISH HISTORY IN TORONTO
At the Ireland Fund of Canada St. Patrick's Day Luncheon. TORONTO, ON, MARCH 16, 2007 -The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the GTA, on behalf of the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, announced today that Canada's New Government will contribute $500,000 to the Ireland Park Foundation to develop a series of projects to commemorate Irish Immigrants to Ontario and Canada. This announcement was shortly followed by Mr Dick Roche, Minister for the Environment in Ireland. He announced that the Irish government will match the Canadian Government's donation, thus totalling government support of $1million CD.
"Our government believes that it is a worthy project that will provide generations of Irish Canadians with a place of honour and remembrance," said Minister Flaherty. "It will be a place where children can come to learn about their ancestry and get a sense of the strength and courage demonstrated by those who came before us.""With this contribution, residents of Toronto and visitors to the city will be able to learn more about the history of the Irish immigration to Canada," said Minister Baird, the federal minister responsible for the Toronto Waterfront. "The development of IrelandPark will be another step on the path away from waterfront industrialization and towards a vibrant waterfront all Canadians can be proud of."

itravel2000 chosen as Ireland Park Travel Partner for opening ceremonies
itravel2000.com, Canada's most comprehensive travel provider, has been chosen by the Ireland Park Foundation to provide travel services for those who wish to celebrate Irish heritage in Toronto this summer. Hundreds of people from all over the world will gather to commemorate the sacrifices made by thousands of Irish immigrants who came to Canada during the mid-19th century. 38,000 Irish arrived on the shores of Toronto in the summer of 1847 when the city had a population of a mere 20,000. Over one thousand people died in Toronto as a result of typhus. IrelandPark will not only commemorate them but will also celebrate the others who went on to help build Canada into the great country it is today. This beautiful park will open on the shores of LakeOntario at the foot of Bathurst Quay on June 21st. The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, will make an official visit to Toronto to mark the occasion.
itravel2000 is offering customized travel planning services for visitors wishing to participate in some or all of these events. Packages featuring flights, accommodations, car rentals and event tickets, as well as sightseeing options around and the rest of Canada, can be viewed online at

It may be dubbed Ireland Park, but when a stretch of stone and grass emerges at the foot of Bathurst this summer, there will be no single sign to bear its name. |
